The Genes That Make Us/ The Boy Who Wasn't Short
Genetics is the most exciting and fast-moving of the modern sciences. The science is fascinating, but the story of genetics is, above all, a human story. In The Boy Who Wasn't Short (UK/US title) / The Genes That Make Us (Australian title) I tell the story of modern genetics - from its humble beginnings to the remarkable power of modern genetic sequencing - through the stories of the people who have shaped genetics, and people who are shaped by it. Scientists, doctors, entrepeneurs - but above all, people with genetic conditions and their families.

I've been a clinical geneticist at Sydney Children's Hospital since 1999, and a genetic pathologist at NSW Health Pathology since 2016. My clinical practice is general, with an interest in cardiac genetics. For many years I was involved in the care of children with rare metabolic conditions. In the lab I focus on rare childhood diseases, especially chromosomal microarray and applications of genomics. My areas of research have included cardiac genetics, intellectual disability and epileptic encephalopathy.

My current main focus is reproductive genetic carrier screening. I am co-lead of the Australian Government funded project
